Q&A … aka FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q: How do I embed a YouTube video into my WordPress blog?
A: Find instructions here http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/07/29/how-do-i-post-a-youtube-video/, but heed this warning: click on the HTML tab before pasting the URL. Then paste the URL. Then save. Then you can go back to the Visual tab or publish, etc.
Q: Are there other tips for embedding video?
A: Check out the FAQ section of your blog host. This will have some specific instructions for you. It’s helpful to remember that you want to look for the HTML for the embedding (that will be on the video service page), and then in your blog you should paste that while in HTML mode/tab and save from that mode/tab.
I have a You Tube embded on my blog but after viewing it you get a list of other videos to see with some questionable content. How do I keep the video but eliminate that info.
Unfortunately, that is the cost of using YouTube. It’s a free service, but it depends upon users, and so it shares more links. I’ll double-check though. Anyone else feel free to chime in.
Q: Patsy: do you happen to know what the blog element is called so I can use to provide links to various handouts I want to add to my SL blog?
A: If you’re in Blogger, then go to Customize>Layout, then in the box click on Add a Page Element. In the pop-up box (you may have to turn off your pop-up blocker), choose Link List (click the Add To Blog button). Fill in a title (like Handouts), skip the Number of links, put your link URL in the New Site URL box and give it a name (like the name of the handout), then click Add Link. Add as many as you like, then when you are done, click Save Changes. In the future, you can edit that set of links (it will now appear in your Page Elements under Layout), or you can add an additional new link category.
Q: How do I change the name of my blog?
A: In Blogger: Go to Customize>Settings, then change the title in the first line. Be sure to scroll all the way down and then click on Save Settings. This will not change the URL you chose. If you need to, you can relaunch a new blog under a different URL (Dashboard>Create a Blog). If you relaunch under a new URL, be sure to send it to me! -Patsy pcarr3@uky.edu
Q: Why might I want to use a personal email rather than my UKY email to set up the wiki?
A: You don’t have to, but from time to time you might get emails from the wiki that you may prefer to have on your personal email. Of course, you can always cancel them.
Q: Why am I having trouble with PBwiki and setting up an account??!!
A: I’m not sure, but we do know that when UK Libraries ran their Blue 2.0 in the spring, they had difficulty with the wiki host because there were too many attempts to create new accounts coming from the same IP range within a short period of time. Try logging in from home with your personal email. If it just doesn’t work for you, Try a different wiki host, such as UK’s SharePoint site or WetPaint http://www.wetpaint.com/.
Q: Who’s on Meebo? I want to connect with someone!
A: The instructions in Module 3 tell you how to connect with patsycat, so that’s the first step. There are others on Meebo as well. Check your email, because I sent out a note with three Blue Twofers who are on Meebo already. You can Reply All to that email to spread your own “handle” so that others can connect to you.
Remember to Accept AND Add! (If you just Accept then you could have issues “seeing” the other person in your Buddy list.)
I am having trouble uploading my podcast to Podbeam. I am using a Mac and garageband. The only extension that it allows is .band….Is there something I can do to upload it to podbeam?
For changing a .band recording (from garageband) into an .mp3 format, use iTunes. Open iTunes, then choose the menu Help>iTunes Help. When the window opens, click on the Index tab, and type in mp3. The index will jump to “mp3″ in the list. Double-click on the word mp3 in the list. Now double click on the item (it’s last in my list) titled Saving a Copy of a File in a New File Format. Then just follow the instructions. I hope this helps!
